NFP Facility Partnership

SPC

The Partnership between the NFP Facility and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) was signed in March, 2005. The Partnership was developed in direct response to the recommendations made during the last meeting of the Pacific Islands Heads of Forestry held in May, 2003 which mandated the SPC with supporting activities that would facilitate a better recognition of the forests and trees' sector in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The objectives of the Facility support are: (i) to raise awareness about the contribution that forests and trees can make towards poverty reduction and environmental stability and (ii) to strengthen capacities to formulate forest policies and advance nfps that follow internationally agreed upon principles. The planned activities were intended to complement efforts being made by the SPC's Regional Forestry Programme and other regional and international projects and programmes. The activities were meant to lead to a greater understanding of the importance of the forests and trees sector and, as a result, to a higher level of political commitment to sustainable forest management.
