NFP Facility Partnership

Asociación Coordinadora Indígena Campesina de Agroforestería Comunitaria Centroamericana

In July 2003, the NFP Facility and the Asociación Coordinadora Indígena y Campesina de Agroforestería Comunitaria Centroamericana (ACICAFOC), a regional organization with 63 farmers and indigenous member organizations from the seven Central American countries, entered into a Partnership Agreement. The member organizations of ACICAFOC have a total of 14.306 individual members and 608.430 ha of forest.  The Agreement focused on assisting community-based organizations with influencing the national forest programmes and other policy processes related to natural resources management in the Central American countries. ACICAFOC implemented 4 Letters of Agreement (LoAs). Through the implementation of the activities of the fourth LoA, ACICAFOC strengthened the capacities of CBOs in their active participation on the implementation of the Regional Agro-environmental and Health Strategy (ERAS) and strengthened their position in climate change discussions. With Facility support, the CBOs of Central America have discussed amongst themselves key issues related to climate change and regional policies, and have participated in several international fora like the Central American residential submission on climate change and the World Forestry Congress.

In 2010, following an self-evaluation of the Facility support (2003-2009) conducted u by independent consultants, with ToRs agreed upon by the Facility, the NFP Facility and ACICAFOC renewed their commitment to working together on the NFP process through the signing of a new Partnership Agreement. The objectives of this new Agreement are: (i) to successfully document experiences of practical and sustainable financial mechanisms for communities and farmers groups; (ii) to exchange experiences of successful financial mechanisms with the aim of identifying the key factors for their success; (iii) to implement several pilot financial mechanisms; (iv) to set up a Community Fund for sustainable financial mechanisms for farmers and indigenous groups.
