SUMMARY:Workshop on a Practical Guide for Integrating Climate Change into
  National Forest Programmes.
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the expert workshop is to give guidance on a p
ractical guide and analytical tool to help national policy decision-make
rs systematically examine climate change issues in relation to forests a
nd trees outside forests and their benefits and to identify and prioriti
ze areas where changes will have to be made to be better able to respond
effectively to climate change. The guide will propose ways to make thes
e changes in the context of a policy process involving all relevant sect
ors. The principal intended audiences of the practical guide are mid and
high level officials of national governments in ministries responsible
for policies\, governance processes\, and legal and institutional aspect
s of relevance to forests and climate change as well as representatives
of other key stakeholder groups. \n\nThe expert workshop will review the
current draft of the practical guide\, considering the overall structur

SUMMARY:Side event on the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel I
 nitiative
DESCRIPTION:The Great Green Wall Initiative is a direct contribution to a
joint implementation of the Three Rio Conventions (UN Convention to Com
bat\nDesertification\, UN Framework Convention on Climate change and UN
Convention on Biodiversity) and particularly to Climate Risk\nManagement
in the Africa drylands. This was recently emphasized by the fourteenth
(14th) Session of the African Ministerial Conference on\nEnvironment (AM
CEN) held in September 2012\, Arusha\, Tanzania which decided to conside
r the GGWSSI\, in the framework of the\nEnvironmental Action Plan of the
New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD)\, as a flagship progra
mme that represents the African\ncontribution to the achievement of a La
nd degradation neutral world in the context of sustainable development\,
as recommended by the\nUnited Nations Conference on Sustainable Develop
ment.\nSince early 2011 an African Union Commission programme in support
to the implementation of the GGWSSI\, is being implemented by FAO in\nc
ollaboration with 13 partner countries. The programme is funded by the E
uropean Union within the framework of the theme 6 “Climate\nChange and E
nvironment” of the AU-EU strategic partnership and benefits from technic
al and financial support of FAO and the GM-UNCCD.\nFurthermore\, the GEF
and the World Bank are also supporting the implementation of the initia
tive in 12 countries through the Sahel and\nWest Africa Program (SAWAP).
The 18th session of COP/UNFCCC offers an opportunity to inform the inte
rnational community and African countries on the results so far achieved
by the initiative and to discuss the way forward to build a solid and w
ider partnership/coalition to support Africa for the\nimplementation of
the GGWSSI. In addition to the status of the implementation of the Initi
ative\, the potential of the GGWSSI for carbon\nsequestration as well as
for adaptation and resilience to climate change will be presented and d
 iscussed.\n\n\nForis: http://foris.fao.org/meetings/meeting/viewMeeting.

SUMMARY:Science Seminar: Who has a right to climate change adaptation? So
cial differentiation in promoting climate resilience
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Description:\nClimate change brings unprecedented cha
llenges for livelihoods in developing countries. Development and humanit
arian assistance\, research for development and our whole conception of
equity and risk need to factor in climate change.\n\nOn 18 February\, th
e CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change\, Agriculture and Food Securi
ty (CCAFS) is organising a seminar which will explore the social dimensi
ons of climate change: how development programming needs to embrace resi
lience\, the transformative cornerstones of social science research for
climate change\, and gender and social differentiation in building agric
ultural climate resilience.\n\nThe seminar\, which will be held in Copen
hagen and streamed live through the CCAFS website\, will include three s
hort presentations that will be followed by a panel discussion from lead
ing development experts\, and then an open discussion during which both
the live and virtual audience will have the opportunity to ask questions
. CCAFS\, DIIS\, and the University of Copenhagen would like to welcome
all members of the development and humanitarian\, agricultural\, climate
change and environmental science communities\, as well as students and
other interested persons to attend the seminar in Copenhagen either in p
erson\, or through the CCAFS live streaming webpage.\n\nMeeting web site

SUMMARY:High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP)
DESCRIPTION:In the framework of IDMP activities\, the HMNDP will provide
practical insight into useful\, science-based actions to address the key
drought issues being considered by governments and the private sector u
nder the UNCCD and the various strategies to cope with drought. National
governments must adopt policies that engender cooperation and coordinat
ion at all levels of government in order to increase their capacity to c
ope with extended periods of water scarcity in the event of a drought. T
he ultimate goal is to create more drought resilient societies.\n\nMeeti

SUMMARY:Dublin Conference on Hunger\, Nutrition and Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Government and the Mary Robinson Foundation – Clima
te Justice will convene an international conference in Dublin on 15-16 A
pril 2013 to open dialogue and debate on these linked challenges\, and t
o encourage and inspire innovative thinking and solutions. The conferen
ce is being organised in partnership with the World Food Programme and t
he CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change\, Agriculture and Food Secur
ity (CCAFS). This will not be an intergovernmental meeting. It will br
ing together key policy makers and global thought leaders with local peo
ple and practitioners facing the realities of rising food prices\, faile
d crops\, undernutrition and voicelessness. The objective will be to fa
cilitate a respectful dialogue and learn from practical experience and r
obust evidence to inform a new approach to addressing hunger\, nutrition
and climate justice\, in the context of the new international developme
nt agenda.\n\n The aim will not simply be to adopt an outcome document.
We hope to inspire new ways of thinking about global development challe
nges and to invigorate and broaden the debate\, at all levels\, listenin
g to and learning from the experiences of local people\, and rooting fut
ure thematic policy approaches in their lives and their efforts to cope.
The Conference will take place in Dublin Castle. To facilitate a focu
sed dialogue\, participation will be by invitation\, but there will be o
pportunities for others to participate online. \n\nMeeting web site: ht
