SUMMARY:FAO-OECD Expert Meeting on Greening the Economy with Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:FAO is collaborating with partners in analyzing existing info
rmation and developing possible scenarios for Greening the Economy with
Agriculture (GEA)\, including evaluation of sustainability progress and
gaps in the food supply chain to projection of food supply and demand to
wards 2050. To review these options a joint FAO/OECD Expert Meeting on G
EA will be held in Paris\, 5-7 September 2011. OECD will host the meetin
g in its Headquarters and FAO will support the participation to this mee
ting of selected experts and chiefly\, those from 7 developing countries
. Attendance to the Expert Meeting is by invitation only. Agenda items i
nclude issues such as: low footprint and productive food and agriculture
systems\; decent rural livelihoods\, green jobs and land tenure\; resil
ience to shocks of low carbon food systems\; quality and health of green
food\; policy coherence for GEA.\n\n\nMeeting web site: http://www.fao.

SUMMARY:Global Soil Partnership for Food Security and Climate Change Adap
 tation and Mitigation Launch
DESCRIPTION:On the basis of the recommendation of FAO's High-Level Extern
al Committee (HLEC) on the Millennium Development Goals to the Director-
General (13-14 October 2009) and the discussions and conclusions from th
e 22nd Committee on Agriculture (COAG) on the 16th-19th of June 2010\, p
reparatory activities have been initiated to develop a vision statement\
, strategy and action plan towards the establishment of a Global Soil Pa
rtnership (GSP) for Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation and Miti
gation.\n\nAs information on this new initiative of FAO is spreading to
the numerous stakeholders in the world\, expectations on this new partne
rship are growing. There is a clear perception by many institutions and
stakeholders at global\, national and local level that such a partnershi
p is urgently needed. The renewed recognition of the central role of soi
l resources for assuring food security and the increased awareness that
soils play a fundamental role in climate change adaptation and mitigatio
n has triggered numerous projects\, initiatives and actions that need an
increased effort of coordination and partnership in order to avoid un-n
ecessary duplication of efforts and waste of resources\, especially in t
imes of substantial budget restrictions. The added value of the GSP in d
eveloping synergies and cost savings among the various existing networks
and programs will assure that the partnership receives the necessary su
pport and endorsement by all major players and stakeholders. \n\nMeeting

SUMMARY:Experts'meeting for the technical validation of the harmonized st
rategy for the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative
DESCRIPTION:The main objective of the meeting is to “examine and technica
lly validate the draft regional harmonized strategy for the implementati
on of the GGWSSI submitted by the Coordination Unit of the project “supp
ort to the implementation of the GGWSSI in eight African countries” fina
nced by the European Union and implemented by FAO with co-financing from
the GM-UNCCD and FAO. More specifically\, participants will be responsi
ble for deciding on the content of the document submitted to them\, to e
nrich it with additional concrete proposals and to mandate the AUC to su
bmit it for adoption during a second larger regional meeting.\n\nThe Afr
ican Union Commission (AUC) with its mandate received from the African U
nion to ensure the policy coordination of the implementation of the Grea
t Green Wall Initiative\, has wished\, in the context of the project fun
ded by the European Union with co-financing from the Global Mechanism of
the CCD and implemented by FAO\, that all the stakeholders agree on a h
armonized strategy for the implementation of the Initiative\, in order t
o ensure that everyone has one vision and that the actions of the variou
s stakeholders are complementary and strengthened. In the same vein\, th
e participants to the first African Drylands Week held in Dakar (Senegal
) from 10 to 17 June 2011\, indicated in their final declaration that: “
It is necessary to establish an harmonized strategy for the Great Green
Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel\, integrating scientific\, technical\,
social and political areas of intervention. This first Africa Drylands
Week has highlighted that an alliance between the various actors and org
anizations of the different sectors should be established”.\n\nThe devel
opment of such a strategy was planned as the first result of the project
in order for it to be used by the countries\, starting with the initial
implementation phase of the initative\, that is\, the preparation of th
eir action plans and investment.\n\n\nForis: http://foris.fao.org/meetin

SUMMARY:Building resilience for adaptation to climate change in the agric
 ultural sectors
DESCRIPTION:Building resilience for adaptation to climate change in the a
gricultural sectors \n\nThere are huge uncertainties on the way climate
change will directly and indirectly impact agricultural and food systems
\, and related vulnerabilities. It adds new risks and changes already ex
isting risks. Therefore one of the most effective ways for agriculture t
o adapt to climate change could be to increase its resilience. Building
resilience now is central to being prepared to future changes. The notio
n of resilience enables to consider together various domains - biophysic
al (ecosystems)\, economic\, social and institutional and at various sca
les. It also enables to consider interactions between domains and betwee
n scales. The side event will offer different perspectives and approache

SUMMARY:Launch of Global Organic Soils and Peatlands Climate Change Mitig
 ation Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Peatlands are major carbon stores. However\, when they are dr
ained and used – mainly for agriculture\, grazing and forestry – peatlan
ds become significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions fro
m peatlands drainage and peat fires are responsible for almost one quart
er of carbon emissions from the land use sector. Peatlands' vital role i
n avoiding and reducing GHG emissions\, as well as in water regulation a
nd biodiversity conservation\, is insufficiently recognized. Peatlands c
onservation and restoration\, and improved peatlands management are real
istic goals and well within our grasp. It is low-hanging fruit in our ef
forts to make progress on climate change mitigation\, adaptation and cli
mate-smart agriculture. \n \n\nFAO and Wetlands International invite co
untries and observers to the launch of the global 'Organic Soils and Pea
tlands Climate Change Mitigation Initiative'. The event presents the act
ivities of the Initiative to promote emissions reductions under REDD+\,
NAMA's and LULUCF. \n \n\nSpeakers at the event include representative
s from FAO\, IUCN UK\, CIFOR\, Greifswald University and Wetlands Intern
ational. \n\nA new publication ‘Peatlands – guidance for climate chang
e mitigation by conservation\, rehabilitation and sustainable use’ will
be launched in the event. Download the publication at www.fao.org/climat

r other vital ecosystem services. Institutions involved in the initiativ

SUMMARY:Energy Enabling the MDGs: Water and food security
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, on the relevance of the agriculture-energy
nexus for the MDGs\, moderator Alexander Müller\, Assistant Director-Gen
eral\, Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)\, called on pan
elists to reflect on what must be done\nto put theory into practice at l
 ocal\, national and international levels.\nSusan Reichle\, USAID\, empha
sizing the links between agriculture and energy\, stressed: the need for
partnerships between government\, civil society\, financial institution
s\, and the private sector\; agriculture-energy nexus opportunities for
business and investment\; and transformative change through scaling-up t
 echnological and institutional innovations.\nOn scaling-up innovation\,
Greg Murray\, Chairman of CleanStar Mozambique\, remarked that synergies
between food and energy production can drive environmental restoration
rather than destruction\, and rural development rather than rural declin
 e. Murray said experience proves these synergies shatter the fallacy of
tradeoffs between energy and food\, citing CleanStar Mozambique’s invest
ments in sustainable cookfuels that benefit rural producers and urban co
nsumers alike.\nChristian Friis Bach\, Danish Minister for Development C
ooperation\, said the nexus between water\, food and energy\nintroduces
tough policy challenges regarding standards and regulations for ensuring
  sustainable biofuels\, guidelines for\nprotecting against land grabs\,
and incentives for getting prices that are low enough to promote energy
 access yet high\nenough to foster energy efficiency.\nSimon Trace\, CEO\
, Practical Action\, indicated that energy access can support food secur
ity through increasing yield and production\, easing labor-intensive pro
cessing\, reducing food waste\, and adding value for economically-viable
livelihoods. In addition to cookfuels and electricity\, Trace remarked
that mechanical energy is the under-appreciated “Cinderella of energy ac
cess.” The subsequent discussion explored sustainable agricultural expan
sion\, cross-sectoral governance\, tradeoffs between organic and convent
ional agriculture\, and challenges to securing domestic finance.\n\n\nFo

SUMMARY:A Dialogue for Climate Services Users and Providers: Towards Impl
 ementation of the GFCS
DESCRIPTION:The WMO and partner agencies will convene a two-day Dialogue
between the users and providers of climate information and services in c
onjunction with the forthcoming Extraordinary World Meteorological Congr
ess. The purpose of the dialogue is to establish a solid foundation for
the intergovernmental deliberations on the implementation of the GFCS.
Noting that the User Interface Platform (UIP) remains the “pillar” of th
e GFCS that is least well defined\, the Dialogue will give particular at
tention to defining and characterizing how the UIP will be implemented s
o as to continuously add value to the GFCS. \n\n The Dialogue will furth
er the stakeholders’ understanding of how implementation can assist deci
sion making “on the ground” and how to better work across communities so
as to maximize the benefits of the GFCS at the national\, regional and
global levels. The Dialogue will also provide an opportunity for climate
services users and providers to learn from one another about the challe
nges and opportunities ahead\, thus paving the way for effective impleme
ntation of the GFCS. An important focus of the discussion will be linkin
g the service requirements with the end-to-end GFCS capability character
ized in its “pillars”\; Observations and Monitoring\, Research\, Modelin
g and Prediction\, Climate Service Information Systems\, User Interface
Platform (UIP)\, and the overarching one of Capacity Building.\n\nMeetin

SUMMARY:Sustainable Agriculture\, Food Security and Climate Change - How
can climate-smart approaches help to build resilience in the agricultura
 l sectors?
DESCRIPTION:Achieving food security and combating climate change are clos
ely linked and interdependent. Climate-smart approaches can increase agr
icultural productivity and farmers’ income\; strengthen the resilience (
adaptation) of ecosystems and livelihoods\; and reduce greenhouse gas (G
HG) emissions. This event will feature programmes and best practices\, i
ncluding integrated approaches such as landscape and ecosystem approache
s within agriculture\, forestry and fisheries. It will specifically look
at program\, policy and financial mechanisms for transition to climate
change resilient systems\, e.g. through resource efficiency and reductio
n of losses in the whole value chain from production to consumption. \n\

SUMMARY:Land Day - Land-degradation neutrality (LDN) and the Durban platf
 orm for enhanced action
DESCRIPTION: “Land Day” is a forum aiming to heighten policy attention to
critical land issues of global relevance. It spotlights vital issues li
ke improved land productivity and the rehabilitation\, conservation and
sustainable management of land and water resources\, especially in dryla
nds. With its focus on sustainable land management\, the UN Convention t
o Combat Desertification (UNCCD) complements the sustainable development
initiatives addressed by its sister Rio conventions\, the United Nation
s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on
 Biological Diversity (CBD).\n\n\nForis: http://foris.fao.org/meetings/me

SUMMARY:Side event on the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel I
 nitiative
DESCRIPTION:The Great Green Wall Initiative is a direct contribution to a
joint implementation of the Three Rio Conventions (UN Convention to Com
bat\nDesertification\, UN Framework Convention on Climate change and UN
Convention on Biodiversity) and particularly to Climate Risk\nManagement
in the Africa drylands. This was recently emphasized by the fourteenth
(14th) Session of the African Ministerial Conference on\nEnvironment (AM
CEN) held in September 2012\, Arusha\, Tanzania which decided to conside
r the GGWSSI\, in the framework of the\nEnvironmental Action Plan of the
New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD)\, as a flagship progra
mme that represents the African\ncontribution to the achievement of a La
nd degradation neutral world in the context of sustainable development\,
as recommended by the\nUnited Nations Conference on Sustainable Develop
ment.\nSince early 2011 an African Union Commission programme in support
to the implementation of the GGWSSI\, is being implemented by FAO in\nc
ollaboration with 13 partner countries. The programme is funded by the E
uropean Union within the framework of the theme 6 “Climate\nChange and E
nvironment” of the AU-EU strategic partnership and benefits from technic
al and financial support of FAO and the GM-UNCCD.\nFurthermore\, the GEF
and the World Bank are also supporting the implementation of the initia
tive in 12 countries through the Sahel and\nWest Africa Program (SAWAP).
The 18th session of COP/UNFCCC offers an opportunity to inform the inte
rnational community and African countries on the results so far achieved
by the initiative and to discuss the way forward to build a solid and w
ider partnership/coalition to support Africa for the\nimplementation of
the GGWSSI. In addition to the status of the implementation of the Initi
ative\, the potential of the GGWSSI for carbon\nsequestration as well as
for adaptation and resilience to climate change will be presented and d
 iscussed.\n\n\nForis: http://foris.fao.org/meetings/meeting/viewMeeting.

SUMMARY:International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutriti
 on
DESCRIPTION:The International Conference on Forests for Food Security and
Nutrition will increase understanding of the important role that forest
s\, trees on farms and agroforestry systems can play in improving the fo
od security and nutrition of rural people\, especially in developing cou
ntries. It will propose ways to integrate this knowledge in policy decis
ions at the national and international levels. \n\nThe specific objectiv
es are to:\n\n- highlight the different ways in which forests\, trees on
farms and agroforestry systems contribute to food security and nutritio
n\;\n- identify key challenges and bottlenecks hindering the contributio
n of forests\, trees on farms and agroforestry systems to food security\
;\n- explore policy options\, innovative approaches and opportunities to
increase recognition of the importance of forests and trees in reducing
the number of food-insecure and malnourished people\; improve the avail
ability of information and appropriate technology\; and increase access
to forests by the rural poor.\n\nThe conference will emphasize broad-bas
ed interdisciplinary approaches and will attract participants not only f
rom forestry but from other sectors related to food security and natural
resource management. \n\n\nMeeting web site: http://www.fao.org/forestr

SUMMARY:Investing in ecosystem services for food security - two decades o
f experience in the GEF network
DESCRIPTION:As a major financial mechanism for the global environment\, t
he GEF plays an important role in safeguarding ecosystem services that u
nderpin food security in developing countries. Through the natural resou
rces focal areas (land degradation\, biodiversity\, and international wa
ters) and the incentive mechanism for Sustainable Forest Management\, th
e GEF and its partners are demonstrating how investing in ecosystem serv
ices promotes synergy between environment and agriculture to support foo
d security. The proposed session will share lessons and experiences base
d on recent analytical work covering two decades of activities in the GE
F network\, which includes eligible countries\, GEF Agencies\, and devel
opment partners. An overarching presentation will be followed by case st
udies on how GEF supports food security through investments in 1) sustai
nable land management\, 2) management and conservation of agricultural b
 iodiversity\, 3) water resource management\, and 4) agro-ecosystem resil
ience. A separate presentation will address potential options for innova
tive financing to enhance application of sustainable land and forest man
agement in integrated landscapes.\n\nMeeting web site: http://www.fao.or
